University of Pittsburgh researchers play a leading role in a White House conference, co-hosted by Pitt and Carnegie Mellon, on the future of innovation.

Obama: America Will Take the Giant Leap to Mars

Yesterday CNN published a piece by President Barack Obama in which he presents his plan to get humans to Mars by 2030. Obama is visiting the University of Pittsburgh as part of the White House Frontiers Conference, at which interplanetary exploration will be a major focus.

“Getting to Mars will require continued cooperation between government and private innovators, and we’re already well on our way,” wrote President Obama. Pittsburgh is well positioned to play a significant role in this initiative as evidenced by the selection of the city for Frontiers Conference.

Earlier this week, Obama praised Pittsburgh for leading the way on all five “new frontiers” of innovation and science — personal, local, national, global, and interplanetary The daylong sessions will focus on building U.S. capacity in science, technology and innovation — featuring exhibitions of technology developed at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University that will assist in accomplish the President’s vision of reaching Mars.
