Biography

Poropatich is an experienced pulmonary/critical care medicine physician who served 30 years in the U.S. Army, retiring at the rank of Colonel with assignments at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command as the deputy director of the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center.

The Center for Military Medicine Research focuses on topics that play to the strengths of the University and to the needs of the Department of Defense, including regenerative medicine, human performance, injury prevention, traumatic brain injury research, eye transplants, tissue engineering, medical device development, and cell therapy. Colonel Poropatich led the U.S. Army in developing telemedicine for remote consultation for both overseas and stateside locations. He served as the U.S. Army medical informatics consultant, is the former chair of the NATO Telemedicine Expert Team, and former president of the American Telemedicine Association.
